He was raised in Fredonia, and later attended Dixie College in St. George for a two-year certificate in teaching), Utah, he taught in Fredonia for seven years. Abia then attended Northern Arizona Teachers College in Flagstaff, Arizona, to obtain his four-year teaching certificate.
